Why won't my ps3 turn off?

I've held the button for 10+ seconds, and nothing happens. It refuses to shut off. I tried using the controller, but nothing comes up on the screen; it's just black (I can turn the screen on and off, but it only shows black, and the ps3 menu won't come up at all). Also, the ps3 is making a low humming noise like there's a disc in it, but I tried several times to press the eject button, but NOTHING HAPPENS. The ps3 system refuses to shut down and I don't know what to do. It's kind of aggravating because I wanted to play Skyrim, but I've got this problem to deal with now.

My mom unplugged it, and I did the holding down the power button thing while it was unplugged, then plugged it back in, but during that time, it stayed on and kept humming. I don't know how it's still on or how it can refuse everything we're doing to shut it down, but it seems it's not going down without a terribly huge fight. D:

When you want to quit the game.
[*] You select on the game's menu: Quit Game. It may go to a Continue/New Game menu

NOW:
[*] You press the the PS button in the middle of the controller.
[*] You select Quit (game) when it shows on the PlayStation 3 main Screen.
[*] You move to the extreme left of the PS3 Main menu choices.
[*] You go up two to the Shut Down choice.
[*] After all that you reach BEHIND the PS3 machine to the ON/OFF switch in the upper left (while facing the front of the machine with it flat)

Something's obviously preventing the PS3's normal shutdown routine from engaging.

Your only option is to unplug the power cord from the left rear of the PS3; once you do that, press and hold the PS3's power button for 5 seconds to clear any leftover power in the capacitors, then plug the power cord back in, and restart your PS3.

There's obviously some sort of hardware failure going on regarding the power switch ! I'd call sony customer support ASAP !
