Does whole bean coffee go stale quickly when stored in food store barrels ?

In North Carolina a food store chain named the Fresh Market has an attractive display of whole bean coffees ,stored in wooden barrels with a plastic lid on top.
Initially is seemed appealing ,then I asked myself ,how long have these beans been in this barrel ,then every time the lid is opened fresh air gets in .
What are your thoughts? I decided to purchase whole beans prepackaged.

If the whole bean coffee is stored bulk style, it should include a roasting date. That way you can tell whether its fresh or stale.
