Like any microscopic animal/plant/whatever....they represent a significant source of food for other animals/plants/whatever. We, the so called higher level animals, depend on lower forms of plants and animals to live. If they were eliminated, the entire food chain could be disrupted and we might not survive. Algae represent a HUGE source of food/energy for the worlds oceans.
