Morality of Transsexualism?
So I've been reading a lot into transsexualism. I have been supporting people's choice to change gender for a few years. But now that I look at it, I don't really know if it is moral (non-religious) to change one's gender. How would one argue it being ok? Another point I commonly came across, was sort of a slippery slope argument. However I wasn't able to think exactly of a counter for it. I have looked at many forums and I am still unsure. The argument that I came across was if people could change their gender then, why not be able to change race, and maybe even species. I know this is a type of slippery slope argument but I am having trouble thinking of a rebuttal. What are some?
@punkrockandminerals, Yeah I suppose it is psychological. Really the changing gender and species is a hypothetical situation, and I'm not entirely sure that changing race is possible. But say that it is possible, how could be support sex change, but not race or species. I know it sounds stupid but how can we morally support one change but not the other, idk I'm struggling with this.
@ClownsDon'tHave300pts, Thanks for your sarcastic remark. It is nice to see people are so understanding, and don't turn people off from asking questions. But I will read the links you gave.
@Here, I understand what you mean. I had read before that sex and gender were different, but I didn't completely grasp the concept. If people were allowed to keep changing physical features about themselves, then were would it end?
@DianaM, I do agree with you that people who change their sex do it for good reasons. And I think there are differences between people getting cosmetic surgery for self-image issue reasons, and people getting it for psychological reason. People who are changing sex are doing it for psychological reasons. But the people who take it to the extremes could also use the argument that they are doing it because of psychological reasons. If a person claimed that he was distressed because he thought he was born a monkey, and we did some surgical adjustments to make him a monkey, then would people have to refer to him as a monkey not a human. It seems like things would get crazy if allowed to the extreme.
@Kevin, Usually cosmetic surgery is done because a person has an issue with how their body looks. I think that it is a little ridiculous to compare sex change to cosmetic surgery, because the people doing cosmetic surgery do it because they are worried about appearances. Where appearances are
@ClownsDon'tHave300kPts (again), What the hell are you talking about? How the hell is my comment insulting?? I think you are being too sensitive. Honestly the only reason people ask questions are because THEY ARE IGNORANT of the subject. What the **** do you think questions are for. Now I understand the difference between sex and gender. People like you are the ones who turn people away from the LGBTQIA community.
@pj, Hmm, your question really made me think. You can change sex because it is only physical, where things like species and gender and innate. If you belong to a species you will have certain innate characteristics that belong to your species, so it would be impossible to truly change species. And race is only a physical characteristic too. Thanks for your response.
