Morality of Transsexualism?

So I've been reading a lot into transsexualism. I have been supporting people's choice to change gender for a few years. But now that I look at it, I don't really know if it is moral (non-religious) to change one's gender. How would one argue it being ok? Another point I commonly came across, was sort of a slippery slope argument. However I wasn't able to think exactly of a counter for it. I have looked at many forums and I am still unsure. The argument that I came across was if people could change their gender then, why not be able to change race, and maybe even species. I know this is a type of slippery slope argument but I am having trouble thinking of a rebuttal. What are some?

Update:

@punkrockandminerals, Yeah I suppose it is psychological. Really the changing gender and species is a hypothetical situation, and I'm not entirely sure that changing race is possible. But say that it is possible, how could be support sex change, but not race or species. I know it sounds stupid but how can we morally support one change but not the other, idk I'm struggling with this.

Update 2:

@ClownsDon'tHave300pts, Thanks for your sarcastic remark. It is nice to see people are so understanding, and don't turn people off from asking questions. But I will read the links you gave.

@Here, I understand what you mean. I had read before that sex and gender were different, but I didn't completely grasp the concept. If people were allowed to keep changing physical features about themselves, then were would it end?

Update 3:

@DianaM, I do agree with you that people who change their sex do it for good reasons. And I think there are differences between people getting cosmetic surgery for self-image issue reasons, and people getting it for psychological reason. People who are changing sex are doing it for psychological reasons. But the people who take it to the extremes could also use the argument that they are doing it because of psychological reasons. If a person claimed that he was distressed because he thought he was born a monkey, and we did some surgical adjustments to make him a monkey, then would people have to refer to him as a monkey not a human. It seems like things would get crazy if allowed to the extreme.

@Kevin, Usually cosmetic surgery is done because a person has an issue with how their body looks. I think that it is a little ridiculous to compare sex change to cosmetic surgery, because the people doing cosmetic surgery do it because they are worried about appearances. Where appearances are

Update 4:

@ClownsDon'tHave300kPts (again), What the hell are you talking about? How the hell is my comment insulting?? I think you are being too sensitive. Honestly the only reason people ask questions are because THEY ARE IGNORANT of the subject. What the **** do you think questions are for. Now I understand the difference between sex and gender. People like you are the ones who turn people away from the LGBTQIA community.

Update 5:

@pj, Hmm, your question really made me think. You can change sex because it is only physical, where things like species and gender and innate. If you belong to a species you will have certain innate characteristics that belong to your species, so it would be impossible to truly change species. And race is only a physical characteristic too. Thanks for your response.

well....I guess if people could change their gender then perhaps there could be some argument as to it's morality, I don't know. the fact is though that's it's not ever been demonstrated that gender can be changed. transsexuals have been trying it for eons....trying to conform biological sex and gender....it's never worked. we just can't change our gender, it's innate, set in stone pretty much at birth.

my own experience pretty much confirms that. I was born with a perfectly normal female gender identity and a perfectly normal male body. I come from a family of love and compassion.....my family tried everything they could think of to conform my female gender identity to my male body and I did everything I could to help. we all tried hard, but it just could never work....I was born a girl and there just never was a doggone thing I could do about it. just like I can't change my race or my species....I can't change my gender identity.

by the grace of a loving God and a small group of very talented and committed scientists it did come to pass in my lifetime, though, that I could change my biological sex to match my gender identity. that was the day that changed my life....and of course it's anecdotal but it's all been for the better. I am a better person then I was before I transitioned....much better. I am a happier and more effective person than before. I am much healthier, calmer, less fearful, more empathetic, kinder and more understanding. if we could have changed my gender identity when I was very young...perhaps these things may have come to pass anyway...and it wouldn't have mattered that I was male....congruence is what matters most, that the body and the brain match. another way to ask your question might be this: is it moral to make yourself a better person if you can, eventhough some other people might not like how you do it?

I think a better argument might be made that it would be immoral to not accept such an opportunity.

    much love and hope. pj

If people were allowed to keep changing physical features about themselves, then were would it end?

Some people would carry it to extremes. Some people already carry it to extremes. Just google "unfortunate plastic surgery". However, you need to understand that we don't change sex (no one changes gender) on a whim. Not only is it expensive both in money and emotion but it's a deliberate process. If done correctly, a therapist is involved throughout. Believe me, we have seen what happens when someone who shouldn't transition does so anyway, and no one wants that to happen.

The bottom line here: I am hurting no one. Given that, I can't find a single moral argument against it.

    it's not a moral issue

    it is a physiological issue

the root cause of this, is that the part of the brain that controls gender identity develops as if it were of someone who belongs to the opposite sex. The only remedy for this is the process of a sex change

think about it, why would someone go through all that trouble and put up with other people's nonsense unless there was something to it.

there is no slippery slope, nobody is changing race or species

A legitimate question. But morality doesn't seem to be involved. The bottom line is: so what? If it makes the person happy, it's strictly voluntary, and no one is hurt or materially deceived, who cares? The greatest literary reference for species-conversion is the oft-filmed "Isaland of Dr. Moreau" by H. G. Wells. Of course his subjects were not volunteers.

If you had actually been reading into transexuals you would know that sex and gender are two different things. Sex is physical and gender is mental. So they are not changing their gender they are changing their sex. Now society says that sex and gender must correlate, so when your gender doesn't correlate with your sex it may make you feel insecure about your gender so having that option to change sex may be comforting. Now I see what your saying about how other physical features are not changed, but have you found a way to surgically/medically change you skin colour or species? No you haven't, but we have found a way to change sexes. So until we are able to medically/surgically change race and species we are changing only sex to make individuals feel more comfortable in their own bodies.

And to the previous comment: Transexualism isn't a birth condition, that's intersex. EDUCATE YOURSELVES!

I fail to see any moral issue in whatever cosmetic procedure a person undergoes. The only issue I may have is whose paying for it?

If the individual is paying for it I see no reason to object on any ground, moral or otherwise.

    Nose job. So what.

    Breast implants. Who cares.

Ribs removed, liposuction, laser treatments, chemical peels--- whatever.

Sexual reassignment. Go for it. Totally on you. It's your body.
