Why are big labor unions spending millions to organize min. wage protests for non-union employees?

When only 1% of the workforce earns min. wage?

Thanks all for your answers, I will consider them all,,,,(well most of them).

Yes Joshua, labor unions choose to spend their money in that manner, but why do they choose that manor?

Robert, read the article, they are doing exactly as I suggest. Can you say “SEIU”.

MTR 2.0 I am looking at the big picture. Increasing the pay of only 1% of the work force by a few bucks will have no effect on other wages or stimulate anything.

EIEIO, raising the min. wage is in no way going to shut down the fast food industry.

Pragmatism Please, anyone working for 10 years and still earning min. wage has much bigger problems than money.

T.R., I like the way you are thinking. What benefits the union is the key.

honestamerican, you are close, and I’m ignoring nothing. Your answer is the official union answer, so I know it is a deception, but again only 1% of the workforce earns min. wage, so they can only effect a small percentage of employees.

che_obama: Bingo Follow the money, a labor union do

che_obama: Bingo Follow the money, a labor union does not spend millions unless it can make billions. Raising the min. wage raises journeyman wage, which raises union dues, which raises campaign contributions to the democrats party.

bob, Unions may be democratic to union members, but they are legalized extortion and racketeering to business. I’m sure many union members are very good people, but I’m referring to union leaders, specifically SEIU union leaders, and the only thing union leaders care about are union members and democrat politicians.

ms manners. Foot in the door is a good answer but not the best answer, I’m sure some day fast food will be unionized.

because many labor union wage scales are tied to the minimum wage. Raise the minimum wage, and you raise union job wages....

Because labor unions are choosing to spend their money in that manner.

I have a minor quibble with the 1.1% figure in your third link. That appears to be individuals making the federal minimum wage of $7.25 / hour. There are millions more making state minimum wages, which may be higher than the current federal minimum wage and would likely be superseded by the $10.10 / hour proposed federal minimum wage.

Just minor, I don't think it distracts from your point too much.

-IF- union money is behind it... its possible to work out in 2 ways that would benefit them. 1) min. wage goes up, in turn the unions can negotiate higher wages for their members OR 2) min. wage doesn't go up, union reps get everyone to sign union cards and organize, then strike again and negotiate higher wages for their newly acquired members... either way, they're going to be getting more income from union dues either from current or new members. Win-Win for the thugs.

Unions are democracies, and the union members see a minimum wage as just basic fairness. Of course most union members want a decent minimum wage, all decent humans want the poorest among us to do better. Basic human decency, you should go out and get some.

My guess would be in hopes of getting a foot in the door, so they can organize the non-minimum wage workers.
