I can't remember the last time I saw one..and you only seem to notice when your cell is dying and you have forgotten to bring the charger.

My little town has three pay phones that are in use all the time. They are especially popular on the weekends when all of our illegal immigrant laborers use them to call home to their families in Mexico. Fifty cents for five minutes. Can't beat it.

It would be a mistake to get rid of land lines. A cell phone quickly becomes useless when you have no way of charging it. Which is what happens if the power goes out. All those New Yorkers with no land lines learned all about that during Hurricane Sandy....Show more

We still have a payphone about 2 minutes walk from my home. I was glad it was there 2 years ago when I moved house because my house phone could not be installed here for a week. My very elderly mother (then hundreds of miles away) was seriously ill at the time and using a pay-as-you-go mobile would have cost me a fortune to keep in touch with other family members. Our payphones now cost 60p (sorry I don't know what that is in dollars - about three quarters of one I'm guessing) and for that one can talk for 20 minutes, so that's not bad.

As for landline phones, I know many people who use their mobile exclusively but I will not be parting with my landline any day soon. There are still many people who do not like having to phone TO a mobile because of the expense. It depends very much on the package one has with a provider but for me it is cheaper to have a p.a.y.g. mobile just to be contactable outdoors (I rarely make calls on it but send the odd text) and have a good tarrif with my housephone which includes calls to mobiles which are with the same company.

There is a pay phone in the entrance to kmart up in the town here. I don't know of any other one.
As to land lines, here you get the cable,high speed internet and a landline phone in a package. The landline is unliminited calling including long distance so everyone has that package for their long distance calls including me and it's cheap so I hope the landline doesn't go away....Show more

Yes, I still see them around gas stations and convenience stores, and the oldest Walmart store here still has some inside the doors as you go in and out.
I hope they don't get rid of them either because there are still people out there that does not have cellphones.
