Question about senior citizen services/assistance (what else can i do)?

Its a bit of a better late then never thing. I recently paid a visit to my 90 year old godfather (cutest little old fart lol). I was appalled and shocked at how and where he was living : *( in a dangerous area living in a referbished hotel surrounded by junkies. I took him to lunch and bought a couple sweaters (its gets pretty cold) anyway i stayed for a good chat in his apartment (horrible horrible) there is this one man across the hall (he is am OBVIOUS drug user a big guy too, he just walked right in asked to use his phone and took a lemon out his trashcan wtf!) anyway I didnt want to say anything god forbid he try to hurt him later (which he told me that scum had ruffed him up before) but i made sure he knew that i would be around from now on. Anyway i could not sleep thatr night, i cried and cried its awful how people take advantage of the elderly i mean he his old but sharp as a tac but he is so kind its hurting him badly. but he has no medical problems as far as i know

! No problems other than a bad back. He can live on hs own. I need to get him out of that ****hole. I called senior services to help him try and move (he does get pension and SS but everyone around him takes advantage of him, his heart is too big) but is there anything else i can do to help??? I am so scared for him hes 90. I love him very much and i wish i would have seen him sooner other than the family parties etc.. he has no family here other than my family (hes not a blood relative but that doesnt matter, his own family doesnt even come around!!!)

Please help if you know what i am going through or anything else you would suggest. I plan to check up on him here and there. The senior services said they would call him and to help him move after a home visit since safety is the issue. No one should live like that especially a man his age : (

I think you have done the right thing by contacting the senior services department. They don't get things done in a hurry but I've found that state agencies will take action to protect senior citizens.

The first question I would as is, will your friend be willing to move? If he is ready and willing to move then you might find out what senior housing is available immediately by talking to your local Area Agency on Aging. They keep housing lists and all kinds of information that is helpful to senior citizens. The number will be in your phone book or you can use the link I will give you to look it up on-line.

Sure sounds like he needs a reliable friend to check on him several times a week. I used to sit with my elderly neighbor that passed a year ago. Made sure he was fed, took his meds, and done his dishes
