Does this complaint from a deaf-mute airline passenger have merit? Or is it political correctness run amok?
A deaf-mute couple complained because there was a note on their luggage saying, "Please text - deaf and dumb.":

Is this insensitive, or political correctness gone crazy?
Here's the definition of "dumb" from the Merriam Webster website:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dumb
The first definition is "Lacking the ability to speak."
Sure, "mute" probably would've been a better choice...
What do you think about this proposed response from American?
Dear Mr and Mrs. xxx,
We understand your exasperation at seeing a note on your luggage that said, "Please text - deaf and dumb". While "dumb" does mean "lacking the power of speech", it also has the connotation of unintelligent. In no way did we intend to imply that. Our handler wanted to ensure anyone contacting you was aware of your disability. We will inform all our employees to use the "mute" instead of "dumb" from now on.
...
We want to do something for you in consideration of your experience. While a hefty settlement might not put a chink in our armor and we do not wish to appear ********* in our offer, we want to keep our reputation **** and span. Certainly something more than extra crackers on your next flight would be appropriate.
How about a nice set of noise cancelling headphones and for your next flight?
