Stone house falling apart?

I have a 90 year old house made of stone. The stone appears to have been covered with a layer of concrete or cement and painted over. A large amount of the concrete or cement fell off and now the stone is exposed. It appears to be chipping away as well. My biggest concern this is occurring at the bottom of the house, maybe a foot off the ground. We have had a brutal winter so I think this caused it. My concern is will the house collapse? Should I have a contractor replace the concrete/cement or are there other problems to check for? Thanks.

Water freezing and thawing in natural cracks may be the problem. You probably will need to remove the outer stucco around the bottom of the house and redo it. I would definitely subscribe to Old House Journal magazine if I were you. I got a lot of good advice out of it when I owned a 100 year old house. I did most of the work myself. A contractor normally charge one third each for labor, materials and profit, so you can save two thirds if you can do it yourself.

Having a mason at least for advice will help.
