If you want to keep your personal files such as Music, Movies, Docs. Etc. Then boot into XP and insert the 8.1 install dvd or usb. Follow the installion process, or you can boot into the 8.1 install device and format the hard drive if you want to lose all your files.

Make sure you PC meets the system requirements for Windows 8.1. After that, check the manufacturer's website for Windows 8.1 drivers. If you pass both then it's time to backup.

Windows XP can't be upgraded to Windows 8.1. When you go to install you'll erase your OS partition/drive then 8.1 will install. Backup your personal files to a second/external hard drive, online storage, etc. Get all the programs you'll want to reinstall as well. It'll save time.

If you have the hardware to support Windows 8.1 I would highly suggest running it. I find that it is the most stable version of Windows yet and there is nothing slow about it. Continuing to use XP would make you vulnerable to new malware, viruses and that....Show more

XP computers are not really designed for W8. Most have a P3 or 4 single core processors, 20-40 GB HDD, and maybe 512 MB RAM
The best you can hope for is a 32 bit version of W8. W8 needs a minimum of 4 GB RAM, 2.0 GHz CPU (P4) and a 80 GB HDD to run without being choppy. W8.1 will not run on a 32 bit system.
Once all the updates are installed, there is 21 GB HDD of space used.
Before you attempt installing W8 download the W8 compatibility wizard from MS.

As mentioned before there is nothing wrong with XP. It will not stop working, just the support (online & call center) will stop along with any further updates.

i would suggest keeping XP, theres nothing really wrong with the OS, and as long as its functional, why not use it? im not a professionall at this, but yeah
