Because the last time I looked, those are complete opposites.

Psychologists tell us that we humans can't hold two conflicting opinions at the same time. The people who believe that anyone can be both Fascist and Socialist must either be uninformed, uneducated, uncaring, imprecise, giving the words their own "special" and private definitions or are morons. Take your pick.

Most of the righties who use those words out of context do so because their simple mind only knows what sounds bad, so they apply it to the lefties. There's no reason to over think it.
Most of these ignorant righties have no idea the degree socialism is already in place in America and these right wing whiners are benefiting f/ it.
Public education is socialistic ... higher education is capitalistic.
The capitalistic health care system in America lead to the ACA legislation.
Two of America's biggest problems are how higher education and health care became unaffordable.

They're not opposites. Fascism is a political system, while socialism is an economic one. They historically have gone together.
According to the online Merriam-Webster dictionary:
fascism: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
socialism: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
Both fit the policy direction and ideology of Obama quite well. Despite what the kooks at the Daily Kos might tell you, fascism is not a small government or capitalist system.

As far as I am concerned, the only people that can accurately be called Fascists were the National Fascist Party of Italy, from 1922 to 1944. All other usages are poor imitations or the attempt at dismissing political opposition by using the name as a pejorative.
The Nazis absolutely had actual "workerist" socialists within their ranks, up until 1934 when they were purged. Ernst Rohm and the Strasserites were as left wing as anybody ever was. But the Nazis were "fascists" right? No, not really.
The "conservatives" love to talk about the Frankfurt Institute and the "cultural Marxism" that came from this collection of Marxist theorists. These Marxists theorists hated Joseph Stalin and criticized him for being "fascist." Stalin in turn hated them, and criticized homosexuality as being the decadence of fascists. Funny thing is, the left wing of the Nazis, Ernst Rohm and the "SA" were wide open homosexuals.
What does it all mean? It means like so many other words today, the term "Fascist" doesn't really mean a goddamn thing.
