Can you find 8mm Mauser ammo at a local gun store?

Is it a common round to find at local gun stores? What about Cabelas, would they carry 8mm Mauser ammo? Also, what about the 7.62x54R? Do most gun stores sell those, and can either be found easily with soft tips for hunting?

When I said "feed my family" I probably should have mentioned i'm actually only 18 and still live with my parents. I feel like it's something I could really do to help out since my mother just lost her job last month and we've been a bit tight on money. What I want to do is get a rifle and practice with it as much as possible. We still have a yearly membership at a local gun club with its own firing range so i'd definitely make sure I get lots of practice before I actually go out,

I also have seen this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMV7JtDotyU And that deer seemed to go down pretty quickly from a Swiss K31, so why wouldn't they do well? I have shot rifles many times before, i'm not new, I assure you.

As often as not, there will be some available, but SAAMI standards for 8x57 JS are pretty anemic, not much better than 30-30 ballistically, for fear that some ignoramus is going to put a JS bullet through a J bore. You'll do best to handload, and if you don't do that, your next best option is to order European ammunition on line.

I can. Of course, I also know that 8mm Mauser is also known as 7.92x57mm and I know which gun shop to go to for it.

Considering you asked this question...I'm going to say...No.

Yes, I bought one at a military antiques store. Most places sell hunting ammo, but less places sell surplus. Look online for surplus.

Last time I needed to buy a box of 8x57 Mauser I picked up some Remington Ammo at Big 5.
