my 38 day old gsd puppy poops and tries to eat it?

why would he do that? is it ok? if not how do i prevent this

It is "normal" as in many puppies do it, and if he is healthy and only eating his own it will not cause undo harm (now if he has parasites or diseases that is another story!).

Eating his own stool is fairly common for dogs, but is distastful to owners and should be corrected.

Also, WHY do you have a pup that young? He needs mum and litter for at least another 3-4 weeks if you want him to learn proper canine social skills!

It should be corrected. Just clean the poop right away. It's a waste and it's not healthy at all :)

Why have you got a 5+ week old Gsd puppy?
He should still be with his mother.
His diet may not be correct if he is eating poop.
He may have worms.

No, it's not okay for him to be eating poop. You can prevent this by cleaning up the poop right away.
