Whose perspective is the story 1984 told from? How does this affect the story?

It's told from the perspective of O'Brien, [SPOILER ALERT] a secret police agent. Because of this, we know a lot more than we would have know if it had been told from the perspective of a character who knows less about the situation than he does, such as Charrington or Goldstein.
