Can I Play Hockey In New York City?

I'm fifteen years of age and have never played ice hockey before in my life. I'm a decent skater. Just decent. I do have good stick handling and shooting abilities from what I see from myself when I play floor hockey. I have good strength and I'm tough to knock off the puck or knock off balance at all really. I have a really great hockey sense as well. I would love to start playing ice hockey on a team but my experience of course is an issue. I'm willing to gather some money to buy some used equipment but is there any opportunity for me to play? I live in Astoria Queens of New York City. Are there any teams that would let me play based on my experience? Any tips or things to do that would give me a better chance of playing soon? My ears are listening for any solutions/opportunities. Yes, you can, but as TexHabs already said, Ice hockey and floor hockey only have few similarities, so try ice skating first.

Ice rinks that are open year round in NYC are
- at Chelsea Piers, about a kilometer (0.6 miles) west from 23rd Street (C) (E) Station at 21 Street & 11th Av, Manhattan - From 23 St/8 Av (C) (E), as well as 23 St/6 Av (F) (M) and 23 St/Broadway (N) (R), you can take the M23 23rd Street Crosstown to 22 Street/12 Avenue
- City Ice Pavilion, 32nd Pl., Queens - Depending on where in Astoria you live, you can either ride the (M) or (R) to Queens Plaza which is about half a mile away from the rink or you take the (N) or (Q) to Queensboro Plaza and then a Flushing-bound (7) local - NOT a <7> Express - one station to 33rd Street Station. You can also take the Q39 from Queensboro Plaza to 48 Avenue /33 Street

Both rinks offer skating lessons and both offer hockey programs for adults and as being said, both are open year-round.
