Why does the media describe them as Islamist instead of Islamic these days?
When referring to terrorist or insurgent groups, why the change in terminology? What is the distinction supposed to be?

Terrorists present a twisted version of Islam because they wish to manipulate people into believing they're following their religion and doing acts of terrorism to please the prophet and to rid the world of nonbelievers, which is obviously not the case; it is not what Muhammed wants. This is why they are called Islamist, because they are interpreting Islam differently than true Islamic people. This is why there is a misconception. Islam is NOT bad, it is a peaceful religion. The terrorists' use of Islam as a force to recruit is what is perpetuating groups like Isis. I believe this is why a distinction is made between Islamist and Islamic. Many however are too ignorant to see this distinction, and falsely believe that Islam is the same as terrorism. It is very unfortunate.

Islamic is the description of anything connected with Islam.
Their false prophet, Mohammed, was a man who did not advocate peace as he was the original Jihadist. With his band of followers he waged war successfully over a number of years until he defeated his opponents and using violence forced most of the Middle Eastern countries to become Islamic. His extremist followers were called ‘Mohammedans’ then but now they are called Islamists and belong to al Qaeda, Al Shebab, Boko Haran, AQAP, ISIS (good name - Isis was a pagan goddess), and the Taleban. “Islam” means “Submission [– to the will of Mohammed]” not, as commonly thought, to the will of Jehovah whom Mohammed did not worship. He worshipped Allah, the pagan Arabian moon god allied to Satan. That is why Salmon Rushdie called the Quran QurYan the "Satanic Verses."

"Islamic" is an adjective that refers to things; Islamic literature, Islamic architecture. "Islamist" can be a noun or an adjective that describes a way of thinking; it's usually used as a pejorative.

They're trying to make a distinction between extremists and "ordinary" Muslims so as not to offend.
The trouble is, what most "ordinary" Muslims believe is pretty extreme.
