Why did my dog bark all night?

Me and my family were on vacation and gone from the house for about a week or so. We have two dogs, and we were thinking about putting one of them (the one that was barking. We've only had him for about five months now and he was abused when he was younger. He has also been passed around and we got him from a rescue shelter. We wanted to put him with a lady who watches dogs because we were afraid he would chew up the house.we decided to keep him with our other dog at the house because he was scared to death at the other lady's house.) with some lady that watches dogs when the owners are gone. We just got back and our new neighbors that are directly behind us left a note on our fence that said "Your dogs are keeping us up at night by barking". We apologized and left a message on their phone. We figured it was the new one. Our first one doesn't bark for no reason unless she wants something. We don't want anyone poisoning our dogs (they would wish they didn't). Is there some way we could keep him from barking when we're gone?Is he barking from something he sees or hears?are we at risk of someone killing or injuring our dogs?(this is only the first time this happened btw). Please help!!! Thanks.

You need someone to stay overnight with your dogs and to bring them indoors if they bark.  If that isn't possible then you need to put them in a boarding kennel. It is too easy for your dogs to get out of control with the barking if they are left outside and no one is there.

Yes, there are crazy people everywhere that poison, shoot, steal and let go someplace far away, and do other horrible things to dogs that bark too much.  Even if you're not there, they are still your dogs and your responsibility to keep them quiet.  Boarding kennels are usually away from people's homes so if the dogs bark all night, no one complains.  It is usually cheaper to board your dogs at a boarding kennel or even at a veterinary clinic than it is to pay someone to stay all night with your dogs.

Consider that it may have been both dogs barking.  If one barks, the other will often join in.  If it happens again, you may return home to find that Animal Control has taken your dogs and you will have a hefty fine to pay plus the cost of boarding them at the shelter before you can get them back.  Your neighbors can also sue you for disturbing the peace.

Since having your grandmother stop in and stay a little while clearly didn't work out well, you need to find another option that works better.

Most dogs bark when they're stressed, scared, or in need. In your case, your dogs were confused and stressed about why they were alone, and they were probably scared about where you were. Our dogs got used to us leaving over time, but if you want them to feel safe, I'd have a neighbour visit them and just hang out with them for a bit every night. And I doubt anyone would harm your dogs for something like this. If they bark otherwise, you can watch Cesar Millan, aka The Dog Whisperer. The stuff he does is incredible!

Unless you have someone to dog sit in their own home or use a kennel then somebody gets to stay home with them. 
They need the "Dog Whisperer".
