why can't the husk come home?

Sweet corn season has started - and everywhere there is a trash can next to the sweet corn because many folks husk the corn right there in the store and if there is not trash provided they throw the husks back in the display. WHY? it's not like they peal their bananas or oranges.....

You can judge the ripeness of an orange or banana by looking at the condition of it's skin - with corn you can't so people peel back the tops of the husks to see if the corn inside is good. If it is, the store makes it convenient for you to peel the entire thing and take it home already peeled, rather than make you peel it at home because the husk and corn silk (the white, translucent strands between the husk and corn) can make a mess and be difficult to clean up.

No, people don't husk corn in the store. The few leaves you see are from people peeling back some leaves to check the kernels on some ears.
