Day after neutering questions?

My dog is a year old. Yesterday he was neutered and has been his normal self, just not quite as hyper yet still happy, wanting to play (which we've discouraged rough playing per vets instructions). But he also hasn't suffered any appetite issues, I followed instructions to give him 1/4 of what he normally eats last night, and then a little more than half of what he normally eats this morning with his pain medication this morning. He ate both like he normally does, and had the remaining half around 6-6:30 for his dinner. It's now 1:33 am and he still hasn't pooped but has really bad gas. I'm assuming that he's fine because he's still in good spirits and playful but I'd like some input. And if there's anything else I should watch for, that'd be great to know.

Since surgery patients are nil by mouth from the evening before the surgery, and eat little (usually!) on the actual day of the surgery (afterwards) chances are there's little to come out.    The digestive system will react to the general anaesthetic (you may see looseness when he does eventually have a BM, and a different colours too) but after a day or two, back on normal food and routine, he should be fine.    If you are at all worried about this surgery, always phone the vet - they'd far rather hear from you than have it go wrong!!    Castration is normally comparatively simple surgery, provided both testicles came down.  Nowhere near as invasive as a spay surgery!   Just make sure you keep him quiet - no jumping, on furniture etc, and only out on a lead too.   And off the incision!

Yes he's fine and actually well and truly fine for the amount of hours post op.

They can go several days before pooping so don't worry about that.  They obviously don't have anything much on the day of the operation and the anesthetic also slows the system down so it is a while before they poop.

Just keep him VERY VERY quiet and feed as normal from the morning.
