@somedude: At times a rebuke is in order.

“Better is it to hear the rebuke of someone wise than to be the man hearing the song of the stupid ones.” (Ec 7:5)

As the other guy said, I tend to ignore them. Unless they deliberately keep provoking you, in which case I give them a piece of my mind.

Jeez, I just home & saw this Q, makes me wonder which Idiot is this?

(pardon my humour) You may have to ignore them. Have a higher standard of kindness & tolerance than they do. Remember Christ's turning the other cheek.

People have viciously assaulted God's son while he was on earth. The Pharisees wrongly judged him as "thinking he's all that", others called him "drunkards & with beelzebub".

The lacking of critical thinking & hateful name calling goes a long list.

God's son ignored them & continued his own business of teaching God's word. When necessary he defended himself against those inappropriate comments targeted at injuring him to protect God's reputation.

It's high class to show kindness to extremely rude people. Then walk away without allowing their hateful words affect your self esteem.

(edit)
Their words will eventually sting themselves, acting in that bad way. Let God judge. He said in the bible He'll roll upon the head of the wicked one their wicked works (or words)

How do you 'handle' an infant who pees on you?
YOUR beautiful little baby?
What do you do to him?
Blame him for his bad choice?
Punish him so he won't make that bad 'choice' again?

Love is the key!
Why do you Love your baby any differently than the immature idiot?
Perhaps the problem isn't the idiot, but our ability to Love?

"We don't see the world as it is, we see it as we are!"

Who are the self righteous idiots you are refering to?

Ignore them. If you try to set them straight, you could be accused of being the same.
