were iron anchors from the age of sail ever hollow?

Unlikely, as mass was important to an anchor. Hollow anchors would defeat the purpose.

No. Not possible to make hollow anchors then, plus, they already knew then what we can prove today, that the holding power of an anchor is directly related to its weight. Hollow anchors are a waste of space.

NO!! a hollow anchor would not have held a sailing ship in place in port.

No. An anchor needs to be (a) heavy and (b) as nearly as possible unbreakable, and a holow anchor couldn't be these things.

You don't say why you ask. If you add that info, it would be helpful.

No. If you've got a hollow iron anchor, it's a 20th century ornament.
