Stupid Harry Potter question. Harry is the child of two magical parents .....why does that make him a halfblood?

Seriously.... By that definition most magical people in Britain would be half bloods..including Dumbledore.

Lily was a muggle born (so "mudblood" or if you like "non magic blood") and James was a pure blood.
So cross a pure blood with a muggle-born and the child only has "half" magic blood (regardless of whether or not the child is able to do magic). So Harry is a half blood because Lily was muggleborn.

Yes, you are correct that most wizards would then be halfblood. It is mentioned that the pureblood families are few and far between now because they only breed with pure to uphold pure status. Which seriously narrows down their options. Added to which some families will just deny any non-pureblood relations (like The Black Family blasting them off the family tree and sort of disowning them).

So yes, pretty much all wizards are now half-blood because at some point in the line, the magical blood has been "tainted" by a halfblood OR muggle born thus diluting the "pure" blood.

If you think of it in terms of colours - Yu have black paint and mix it with black paint. You have pure black paint. You mix pure black paint with white paint and you get grey paint. Mix that with black again and you get darker grey paint. Or mix it with white and get a paler grey paint. No matter what you do (add more black or more white or even a different shade of grey) you will never get back to pure black paint (because once, somewhere you added white)

Harry IS a half-blood because James has wizarding parents but Lily was a Muggle Born, like Petunia. Simple. :)

Half-blood is the term given to wizards and witches who have a Muggle born parent and magical parent, and this applies to Harry Potter. His mother was Muggle born. Hermoine's parents were both Muggles.

I'm aware of why...but Harry is still the child of two magical parents...no half about it.

technically, he's not. but, the way the wizarding world sees things, you're either "pureblood" or "halfblood". it's not intended to be a literal half.

and you're right, most of the wizards would be half bloods. hagrid said it himself. "it's codswollop to boot. why there isn't a wizard alive today who's not half-blood or less." the pureblood fanatics claimed that they didn't have any muggles in their family, but thats just an arrogant delusion. they just didn't want to admit to them.
