We have had an extended stay in Europe and will be returning to the US for a 6 month long visit.
We are US citizen living abroad and US Passport holders.
Do we need to be screened for security through the ESTA program to get onboard to go home?
Have read but still a bit confused as we are not from visa waver countries.
I wrote the US embassy but waiting to hear back, just a bit confused.
had enough of idiots - signing off...
No, of course not. The ESTA is a mechanism for ensuring that the traveller is actually eligible to enter the USA under the visa-waiver program. Given that you do not need a visa to enter your own country (!), you also cannot by definition be covered by the VWP, therefore there is no need to pre-clear you through the ESTA either. Presenting a US passport when checking in negates the whole question of visa requirements or any other aspect of immigration clearance.

No they do not. The moment you book your flight you passport info will be given, therefore not needing an ESTA authorization.
