Are male gender roles to be kept because when we need them they better be there for us?

Just look at how sick that sounds.

Question: Why dont men help women like they use to?? Where are the "real men"??

No.

The male gender role is to protect and provide for women. Look around you. The number of men doing that is decreasing.

In Western nations, the vast majority of women are employed and providing for themselves. Even those who are primary caregivers of their children/families (maintaining the female gender role) often try to provide something with part time employment. Women are also learning how to protect themselves in various situations in increasing numbers. Even in third world countries, more and more women are getting educated and working to provide for themselves.

Women are the ones trying to create a world where the male gender role will no longer be necessary.

Males encourage other males to keep them. That's why it's not usually women you see taunting a guy for liking feminine things. If anything a lot of women find that cute. But guys start slinging out cuss words like f@gg0t, sissy, and shame him. If a man admitted to his male friends he was taking his wife's last name it's doubtful even one would have a pleasant reaction. The list goes on. Not saying women aren't also guilty but it's primarily men.

What roles? Father? That one is pretty important. Beyond that, I don't know of any specifically male roles that are valuable. As for women, mother is the only specifically female role that has much use also.

Even husband and wife aren't necessary. Nice sometimes, but not necessary for the stability of society.
