Math homework help!?

Diamond grocery store has a special offer. Customers may use their cash register receipts from the previous month to get a discount on any purchase. The discount will equal 10 cents for every dollar spent the previous month. Mrs. Gomez used all of her previous month's recipes and got 5.88 in change from $50 after buying $63.01 worth of groceries. How much had she spent the previous month?
How do I go about answering this question? It's for an elementary education class so we are not able to use algebra. Thank you! Will pick best answer!

original bill of 63.01 - actual cost of ($50 - 5.88 change = net cost of 44.12) = 18.89 total savings

... times 10 (the inverse of 10%) = $188.90 worth of receipts ... but there is a rounding error in that the savings is 10% of EVERY DOLLAR (not fraction thereof, especially in the real world) and 10% of $188.00 = $18.80

(you are right)

Let x be what she spent the previous month

.10x +63.01-50= 5.88

.10x = -63.01+50+5.88

.10x = -7.13

x= -71.30 spent the month before

......................................

non -algebra way

-63.01+50+ 5.88 = -7.13

-7.13 * .10 = $71.30 spent the month before
................

check :

in: 50.+5.88 + 71.30/10 = 63.01

out: $63.01 .......................correct
