I set gains with my phone mates and mp3 style so when I play the radio it sounds better and more bass and louder clearer music. Same volume , so does it affect the output and ac volts at the terminals ? Thanks mate

Yes, the signal strength from the HU is sometimes lower when you're using an aux source instead of the HU directly (usually tuner or CD). Some HU's have source level adjustment to correct for this.
If your gain was set using the weakest signal (aux input) then you do need to be careful when you're using a stronger signal to keep the amp from severely clipping.
If the gain is adjusted correctly for the aux source then it should perform optimally at high volume. The direct sources will perform the same, but their optimal volume will be slightly lower.
Another consideration is that aux source (phone?) music files are sometimes highly compressed and simply don't sound as good as strong over the air sources or CD's.

Son, the gain on the amplifier is suppose to be set to the output signal of the head unit.
Not by your friend's phone or MP3 player.
