Plastic / rubber gloves would keep your fingernails from scratching inside your butt, but If you keep your fingernails short, that's not likely a problem. Wash your hands before and after. If all you're gonna stick up your butt is a finger or two, I dunno why a little vaseline would be bad, but I'm not sure. You could try some olive oil, I'd think, but don't spill it on the carpet, 'cause it'll make a permanent stain. Actual soap should be OK, too, but i dunno about body wash or shampoo.
