The only way you can do it is to know what the material is. I would just make one up. Assume it is water. Now you can do it.

0.25 tones = 1/4 * 2000 pounds / 1 ton = 500 pounds.

500 pounds [ 1 kg / 2.2 pounds ] * [1000 grams / 1 kg ] * [ 1 mL / 1 gram ] * [1L / 1000 mL] * [1 gal / 3.78 L ]* [ 4 quarts / 1 gal]

500 * 1000 * 4
================
2.2 * 1000 * 3.78

You can do the division.. You should get ABOUT 240 and that's pretty rough. I've used fundamental definitions . I'm sure you can find a more direct way to do it, but it is always good to know where things come from.

A quart weighs 2 pounds. Divide 2 into 500 pounds (a quarter of a ton). A quarter of a ton of water weighs...

There is an old saying - 'A pint's a pound the world around' - meaning that for water, one pint weights one pound. Hence, a quart will weigh two pounds.

Now, a 1/4 ton is 500 pounds (2,000 divided by 4) so that means there are 250 quarts in a 1/4 ton.

Are you sure it's quarts and not quarters? Four quarters = one cwt. 20 cwts = one ton.
