Get Quickbooks Certification first. Most of the people who will pay you will be very small businesses who only need an accountant to do the books 3 to 6 days a month.

My best friend is an independent bookkeeper. She has Quickbooks Certification, but not even an AA in accounting (she has 1 semester under her belt)

But for the past 14 years she has has a stable of 8 to 12 customers that she works for on a part time basis . She formed her own business (CCCCCCCC's Bookkeeping - Quickbooks Certified) and grosses close to $60k per year before taxes.

You just need that certification and then you can advertise yourself as a Quickbooks certified Bookkeeper, and then contact local CPA firms to see if they want to hire you as a contractor to tend some of their clients AND you put ads on your local Craigs list for a certified bookkeeper.

It may take a few months before you get enough clients that you are making what you were making at the firm, but the good part is, you know how to do your own taxes and you will not have to hire a bookkeeper!

An associates degree is not near enough to qualify you to start your own accounting business. You need your bachelors, preferably a masters or CPA, and several years of accounting experience full time at a senior level.

when I retired working at a regular job I wanted to expand the bookkeeping business I had had part time for years
I sent letters to people who advertised their fictitious name in the newspapers, I probably sent out thousands of letters and I did get several clients as a result
once a client was well satisfied they in turn recommended me to someone they knew so that's how business does increase
I keep getting a lot of calls even today about google and other services to put my business name on line but I am winding down due to age and refuse all of them

Our accountant is a CPA and registered to appear before the IRS. I wouldn't have it any other way. Heck ~I~ could almost get QuickBooks certified.

Try to get some clients...but without the BS degree, you will find it hard to get clients. Most clients want that 4-year degree and many are going to want someone who is a CPA. If you get certified as a tax preparer, you can probably pick up some money doing that.
