I am trying to rent some books for my classes and the due date to return them is december 19. I am confused because I thought I would be taking these classes for the whole year which would mean I need these books during the spring too.

If your college has two semesters, Fall and Spring , then classes are for one semester only. Some colleges are on the quarter system.
You will register for classes in November for Spring semester. You will need books for those new classes. Most colleges break for winter break the third week of December. Which is why they are due back on the 19th.
College courses are usually only a semester long. There may be a second course in the spring that completes the material, but you will either have to rent the book again or get part two.
Classes are either a quarter or semester long. Sometimes there are courses in a series (chem, calc, bio, languages) where you take classes for two semesters or three quarters in a row and use the same book. I guess in your case, you would re-rent it starting in January.
Classes last for the term you register for them. One term. Double check with your school to be sure, but unless you're in high school, there should be a separation registration window for each term. There are some classes that you have to take in succession, one after the other, and sometimes those will use the same textbooks, in which case you're often better off just buying the books rather than renting. But you'll still have to register for each class individually as term registrations open.
