what does " their feeds disintegrated into static." mean here?

On the screens, miles above the earth, nine of the missiles exploded. There was a huge flare of fire
and then their feeds disintegrated into static.

If they were nuclear missiles (and it sounds like they were), then when they exploded, there was likely a strong Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), which can flood sensors with receivers with static electricity, and cause damage to electronics. Probably the missiles exploded, and the EMP from them drowned out the radar feeds for a period of time.

Unpacked, the statement means that information is being gathered then "fed" to a video monitor where it is displayed as images, charts, and raw data. It is common practice amongst engineers to refer to the information displayed on the screen as a "feed".

Cheers!

Instead of getting a CLEAR signal, the interference degraded the signal so badly that all they got was static. Really, you have to ask?
