There is generally a high turn-over rate in retail, so employers tend to expect people will quit on them. If you want a good reference, speak with the manager and give him or her two weeks notice. Work out your remaining time and then move on. If you don't care about a reference or (for whatever reason) don't believe you will get a good one from that particular employer, simply go to work and tell the manager you want to explore other prospects and are leaving your current position at the end of the day.

I just quit Wal-Mart. I couldn't even find a manager, so I found the Personell lady, said I quit, left my vests on her desk, clocked out, left my tag in the basket under the timeclock, and walked out of the store.
