There is generally a high turn-over rate in retail, so employers tend to expect people will quit on them. If you want a good reference, speak with the manager and give him or her two weeks notice. Work out your remaining time and then move on. If you don't care about a reference or (for whatever reason) don't believe you will get a good one from that particular employer, simply go to work and tell the manager you want to explore other prospects and are leaving your current position at the end of the day.

Just stop showing up, that's how most people do it where I work. However, it might be different for the day shift, us overnight stockers are a different breed than the poor saps that deal with the customers when the store is open.

You type a resignation letter and sign it in pen.
Give 2 weeks notice so you can get a good reference from them in the future.
There are lots of examples of resignation letters on Google.

I just quit Wal-Mart. I couldn't even find a manager, so I found the Personell lady, said I quit, left my vests on her desk, clocked out, left my tag in the basket under the timeclock, and walked out of the store.
