If you can't find a local source of assistance, you are out of luck.

There are many options available, including MURS, which few people know exists.
Look into it.

Amateur radio is good if you aren't using the radio for business purposes, 
which is illegal on the ham bands.

I have a suggestion for ya: ham (amateur) radio is far more useful and a license is not all that hard to attain. Check it out at www.arrl.org
