Ghost in the machine?

I have a boombox that randomly comes on during the day. It will happen when no one else is nearby. I don't have a remote for it anymore...lost that years ago. And to top it off, if I have a CD in the machine it will start playing. To do that manually you would have to push 2 buttons, simply turning the machine on wouldn't normally start playing the disk, you gotta push the play button too. There is no alarm or timer set, this doesn't happen at the same time or on the same day of the week. It happens about once a week or sometimes every two weeks, but I've had it happen multiple times a day as well. How would I figure out if it was interference from neighbors electronics or what else could it be?

The push buttons pad under them were all worn down or became high resistance all the time. No such parts is available because this device is too cheap to cover the cost of repair.

Sunlight (or IR from a CFL or LED lamp) is getting into the remote receiver on the unit.

Prevent that, and it shouldn't act funny any more.

That is, unless some other thing's remote is doing it.
