A sort of pump/filter. (They don't use electricity.)

Iodine tablets are pretty reliable. But they taste bad and you shouldn't drink a lot of iodine..
"life straw" brand water filters are also reliable...
But boiling the water over a camp fire for five minutes is most effective.
