You can look in Proverbs, and places like 20:30 talk about how discipline is helpful. But remember, proverbs are guidelines, not absolute truths. They say that whoever loves pleasure or is lazy will become poor, but there are counterexamples. Just not many.
I also believe that a person's heart can change, no matter what their past was. I've seen it.
