Is it rude that I told my friend/ex-coworker about my salary increase?

He left the company so he could make more money. Right after he left, the managers gave us all a pay raise so that nobody else would leave. Before he left he was talking about how he would make $4 an hour more at his new job, so it’s not like he made it a secret of how much more he was making at his new job.

Just recently we were talking and he said “I’ll come back if they pay me more” and I made the comment “we were supposed to keep this on the down low but since you don’t work there anymore...after you left Rob gave me a $2.50 raise.” He said “oh wow.” I was kinda hinting maybe they would be willing to negotiate but looking back I kinda felt weird sharing it. But it’s not like he kept it a secret that he left because of money.

It's not rude, it's unprofessional.

If your Employee Handbook has a confidentiality policy or you signed a confidentiality agreement, what you did could get you fired.

"Rude" is the least of your worries.

By the way, they're NOT going to hire this guy back. His gossip, dissatisfaction and unprofessional behavior was an expensive pain in the butt to his employer.
