How do I get the clear coat off my car. (see below)?

It is peeling in many spots. I want to take it all off and spray a new clear coat on it. I have spray equipment.

If you don't know how to remove the clear coat, you don't know how to paint a car.

If the clear is lifting and your base coat is a metallic, then your best option is to respray the whole car/panel. Even if you are careful, rubbing back the clear to remove all the fried patches will mark the metallic underneath, and the "damage" will very obvious in the sun especially even when you respray the clear over the top. Whether that matters or not depends on the you. You may be better off leaving it with patchy clear coat as having a bad respray. The time consuming part of this job is gonna be masking and prep work. So if you already have the gear and gonna tape everything up anyway, it's not much extra effort to reshoot the base coat too. I'd spend the extra money and go; spot prime, base coat, clear coat.

Without ruining the softer color coat... couple hundred hours of wet sanding very carefully.

Will not be fun. There are much, much easier solutions.

Fastest way is with a power sander. That will also remove the color coat under it. Clearcoat is brittle as glass and you can shave it off with a razor scraper, but that will take forever.

It is not a question of how but a question of why young grasshopper.
