Unknown shotgun?

I just bought a 12 gauge shotgun at my local farmers market and The only writing on it is a serial number on the receiver and some branding on the barrel. The only writing on the receiver says 1438 and I’m assuming that’s the serial number. The only writing on the barrel says “ marlin firearms co new haven, conn. 12 gauge 2 3/4 mod” and a stamp that says JM. I tried looking it up online and the only marlin model I’m seeing that’s close is the model 120 but it has a different receiver and parts inside are shaped different. Any ideas what it is? Where could I go to find out what it is

Evan, please do not and I repeat do not believe anything daniel g posts. He is a well
known troll and is trying to destroy the outdoor section by giving false and
dangerous answers.   He
has been skipping all his meds and he will get your email address  and stalk you. He is
very close to a nervous breakdown and going back to the asylum for mentally
deranged
people. He is close to killing someone if he does not receive help.

No doubt an older, possibly vintage marlin, maybe search in those categories.

It’s a dangerous one. That’s for sure.

What little I know is the JM barrels are the "original" barrels and collectors seem pretty impressed with them.

Go here https://www.heritagemfg.com/find_model.cfm and you can identify it by serial number!
