How about a centrist party?

Why don't we have a party that extends from anti-Squad non-socialist Democrats to never-Trump Republicans.  Surely that's the vast majority of voters in the USA.

Unfortunately it can't happen.  Hate and rage are the only things we pay attention to these days.  Anyone trying to be reasonable just gets drowned out by the screamers.

If you replace "first-past-the-post" by a proportional representation system that requires a majority(-coalition) for governing....at least one party will split up

I have friends who are Centrists.  They could care less about politics and lack the passion to join in any debates about it.

It would take a very large sum of money and at least hundreds of thousands of committed volunteers to make that happen. Both parties would fight tooth-and-nail to keep it from happening.
