Miles kept his job past (after) the Pearl Harbor attack.   Hung on to the job.   In this context, "past" is like half past 4 o'clock--after.

in this case, hung on past could mean "unable to decide" or "reach a majority decision within the board".....   regarding the Pearl Harbor.    They meeting could not decide on the decision regarding Pearl Harbor.
