In the 1990s, where did you buy paper maps from?

I was born in july 1994, and I remember my dad using a paper map for vacations only in the USA (before he bought his first GPS in the middle of the year 2007). But where did you buy maps only of the state (or also a thick map book atlas of the whole USA) at?

Gas stations or AAA. You can still get them at AAA.

Thomas Bros. for state and county maps.  Rand McNally for state and country maps.  Gasoline stations used to have them, published by oil companies.
National Geographic used to give maps in issues of magazines.  I have dozens of those, and a globe, and a very nice atlas from 1952 that is still very valuable.

All good book shops had a comprehensive range of maps (and still do).

Gas stations usually had maps for sale.
