In the 1990s, where did you buy paper maps from?
I was born in july 1994, and I remember my dad using a paper map for vacations only in the USA (before he bought his first GPS in the middle of the year 2007). But where did you buy maps only of the state (or also a thick map book atlas of the whole USA) at?

Back in the 50's they gave them away free at gas stations. And then one day a gas station attend said," Them things aren't free no more and you can pump your own damn gas and clean your own damn windshield!" Traveling hasn't been the same since!

From this map store in town. I bet the internet put it out of business by now.

Thomas Bros. for state and county maps. Rand McNally for state and country maps. Gasoline stations used to have them, published by oil companies.
National Geographic used to give maps in issues of magazines. I have dozens of those, and a globe, and a very nice atlas from 1952 that is still very valuable.

As an AAA member, I could get them for free via a phone request. Otherwise, Walmart, K-Mart, and gas stations sold them.

Gas stations usually had maps for sale.
