You've got that backwards.
If you are smart enough to understand that rightwing fairytales don't hold water, becoming liberal/leftist is an obvious result.
Fairytales like
- capitalism is freedom/meritocracy
- homelessness is necessary to cure laziness
- a rising tide lifts all boats
- trickle-down works
- unemployment is always the unemployed's fault

Its not a coincidence. Liberals are not smart because they are liberals, they are liberals because they are smart. They do independent research and respect the facts, are educated and do not accept sound bites without fact checking. Since reality has a liberal bias, they naturally become liberals, because the facts prove that liberal platforms are based upon facts and conservative's based upon propaganda..clear to anyone that studies and reads a bit, beginning at adolescence.
