They didn't. "Moslem" is the older spelling. The transliteration "Muslim" became more popular because it is phonetically closer to the Arab pronunciation. It's no different than how "Bombay" became "Mumbai" or how "Peking" became "Beijing" or how "Usama bin Laden" became "Osama bin Laden."

They didn't. 'Moslem' in Arabic means 'one who is evil and unjust' when the word is pronounced, as it is in English, 'Mozlem' so the 'correct' way is still Muslim. But transliterations have resulted in a variety of spellings such as Makkah or Mecca, Quran or Koran and Kaaba or Ka'bah.

They were referred to as moslems in my school textbooks. The books were printed on stone tablets, so it was a while back.
