Does signing a petition really work?

We know president trump & the republicans are against extending the $600/week unemployment benefits.

People on my Facebook have a petition w/ 250,000 signatures to extend it.

Would it matter? We know the senate and trump are against it so

A facebook petition means sitting at home and clicking your mouse on a little box on the screen.  As political influence techniques go, it's like trying to stop the Niagara River by throwing rocks at it.  You'll make a tiny splash, but you won't stop anything.

It may help if some Congressmen are undecided.

But do write to your Congressman too.  You can tell him about the petition, but do it in writing, because Congressmen care most about what THEIR constituents want, not what facebook says.

Really depends on what a petition is for, if it's ever submitted to whoever is it trying to petition for/against or if it just sits there collecting dust. And how does a Facebook petition get submitted to the person/company/group in question?

In the case of something like that, that has to be debated and passed within our government, the chances are probably slim that it would do any good...  Not as easy as, say, enough people making a toy company realize that producing a toy vacuum in a  non-gender specific color would be worth it to them; the kind of petition that's more likely to work.
