What is the difference between Level and Plumb?

What is the difference between these two in constructions, and is there any examples in which there was a failure in level and plumb?

level- 1.a horizontal plane or line with respect to the distance above or below a given point.
plumb- 2. test (an upright surface) to determine the vertical.
