how do i check disk for consistency?

Hi, for a number of weeks at start up my laptop shows a screen and on it it mentions that one of my disks need checking for consistency. When the computer starts up, the real time protection icon is red and i have to turn it back on. Please help.

CHKDSK is, i believe, the program you want.  it runs from the command prompt and is built into Windows

Go to My computer or This PC
Right click on the C drive
Select Properties, tools, check drive for file system errors
Repeat for any other drives listed apart from DVD/CD drives
